The eight-year-old Guatemalan boy who died in U.S. custody this week had trekked from a rural northwestern village.
The Guatemalan foreign ministry said Felipe Gomez Alonzo and his father, Agustin, came from the municipality of Nenton in Huehuetenango province.
Gomez was the second child to die this month in U.S. custody after crossing the border from Mexico, following the death of 7-year-old Guatemalan Jakelin Caal.
Huehuetenango sees the highest numbers of migrants leave for Mexico from Guatemala every year.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has not released an official cause of death for the boy.
