According to a report by Reuters, on Friday, a 46 year-old has become the third woman to enter the Sabarimala Hindu temple in south India in defiance of an ancient ban on females of menstruating age. Reuters reports that the hill Temple, which pays homage to the celibate god Ayyappan, is one of a few in India that bar entry to girls and women between the ages of 10 and 50, claiming that menstruating women are impure. On Wednesday, the first two women to break the ban reportedly arrived in an ambulance and were escorted by a plainclothes police officer through a side gate of the temple.
