For our last landscape photography shoot in Tasmania, Andrew and I decided to take a little bit of a risk. We were pretty pumped after getting some lovely light that morning in the Sentinel Range. So we thought we’d try and get a unique perspective of the Mt Field Range. We were going to be shooting when the sun was setting so we through we try and find a shot looking at the Range from the west side. The issue was we had to find a spot that would give us a clear view of the Range, and we were in an area that we weren’t familiar with and didn’t have lots of roads. So there was lots of driving, stopping to ask help from the locals and check out Google maps. We eventually found a road that looked promising, but it was closed to vehicles. We had no choice but to hike up as far as we could. While we took a risk to try and find a unique location, it was our perseverance throughout the day that paid off. We found ourselves in front of a gorgeous vista, with the setting sun and just enough time to shoot a panorama. I took nine separate exposures for each part of the pano from 1/8 sec to 1/50 second. To get the full dynamic range, I only needed 3 shots each a stop part, 1/8, 1/15 and 1/30 but it was handing the exposure just in case. I repeated this 12 times and stitched the shots together in Lightroom. With all the information there, in a much bigger file, I just needed to: • bring up highlights • Bring down the exposure in the sky • And warm the image a little. What I like about this shot is even though it a panorama, there’s still some foreground interest with the sunlight hitting the leaves on the trees closest to the camera, which frames the valley and the ranges behind nicely. It ended up being quite a wide pano, but it needed to be given the scene. I tried a 3x1 crop with a slightly different edit, and in my opinion, it just wasn’t quite as good.
