As we had become accustomed to over the past 10 days, we had an early start to our final full day in Tasmania and our plan was to shoot a landscape image of the Sentinel Range with hopefully an epic sunrise. It was pitch dark when Andrew Dawes and I left the van and hiked up the hill opposite the Sentinal Range. It wasn't long before the first of the light began to appear and we could see that our plan to shoot the Sentinel Range wasn't our best option. We had high thin cloud with a break toward the horizon which was perfect for landscape photography, we weren't complaining. The only issue was the cloud was catching the best of the light over Lake Gordon. We quickly assessed our options and worked out that our best chance for a gorgeous sunrise on the other side of the hill. It's good to have a plan each time you go out shooting landscapes, but it's important that when you see a better option, you take our opportunities and adapt to your conditions. We hiked to the other side of the hill which overlooked a valley and explored the area for some foreground interest. Rock and a few trees anchored the image, the main hero was going to be the sky. I wanted to capture the large vista so started with the 17-35mm, a circular polariser, with an aperture of 8 on ISO 64 needed a shutter speed of around 2.0 seconds.
