What makes an amazing landscape image? Sharp, great light, or high resolution or lots of detail? A great picture could have some of these things, but I think there’s more to creating a great image. A good image is interesting. It makes a connection, evokes emotion and potentially inspires others. For your image to have this sort of impact on people who view it…and that is a story! It’s through stories: * We can engage our audience * We can connect with people who view our images * Stories can evoke emotion * We can potentially inspire others What does a story actually look like in a landscape image? In a landscape image, the story is about the landscape itself. The story is about the interactions of the elements that make up the landscape. * Like water falling down a waterfall and hit the water below, or * Waves crashing over rocks * How the light is hitting the treetops or reflecting colours from the clouds * Patterns caused by the tides or * How the weathering over time has shaped the landscape By capturing a story of the landscape, we as photographers, are building emotion and creating a connection between the audience and the landscape. As landscape photographers, we are the author of the story. It’s our job to build the structure within an image that guides the audience through the story we are telling. In photography, that structure that helps tell a story it’s called composition. A well-considered composition, guides the eye of the viewer through the image, helping them make sense of what they are looking at and enhances the story that is being told and increasing the impact on the viewer.
