When I've shown how I capture my landscape images in my previous videos, a few of you have noticed that I use back-button focusing and asked for my opinion on it. So in this video, we’re going to cover what it is and why I use Back-button Focusing. When I started out in landscape photography I was so keen to take photos. Over time I started looking at how my camera was setup and I could change it so the experience was improved. I should add the normal disclaimer that this is not going to directly improve your photography, nor is it a method that will give you more accurate focusing necessarily, but I think back-button focusing has helped me capture the image I wanted more consistently…Let me explain! What is Back-button focusing? It’s quite simple, usually when you purchase a new camera, and you start using it straight out of the box the shutter button at the front is set up to do two functions, focus the scene (when you half-press the shutter button down) and release the shutter (with a FULL press of the button). Back-button focusing is when you remove the focus feature from the shutter button and use a button on the back of the camera, usually the AF-ON button to get the camera to auto-focus the scene. There are a few reasons why I prefer Back-button focusing. I don’t like the Shutter Button performing two tasks. Splitting the two functions across two buttons make more sense. By removing the auto-focus feature from the shutter button, I avoid the camera re-focusing, each time I take a shot. This can be important in dark situations when the camera can take some time searching around for a focus. When I’m bracketing a scene with multiple images, I don’t want the camera to re-focus with every shot. It can also be critical if I'm trying to time a shot at a particular moment like a wave crashing or water drawing back out to sea. I show you how I set up Back-button focus on my Nikon D850.
